How did your career develop after graduating from FM HK?

After graduating from the Faculty of Medicine in HK, I completed my doctoral studies at the Faculty of Medicine in HK, ophthalmology, which ended with the defence of Ph.D., then I was at the Department of Ophtalmology of the Faculty Hospital in HK as a research staff member. I obtained my first and second ophtalmology assessment degrees. In 1984, I reached the position of the head of the Department of Ophtalmology in Teplice in Bohemia by audition, in 1986, again by audition, I obtained the position of the head of the Regional Ophtalmology department in Ústí nad Labem. From 1993 to 2015 I was the head of the Department of Ophtalmology at the FM and Faculty Hospital in HK. 1996 I was appointed Professor in Ophthalmology. I have been the chairman of the professional society of ophthalmology, the accreditation committee of the Ministry of Health, a member of the Research Board of the ČL, repeatedly the RB of the Ministry of Health, vice-chairman of the UEMS EBO, a member of the SOE board and I have held many other positions. I have been honoured with many awards for my activities.

What comes up in your mind when you say the Faculty of Medicine in Hradec Králové?

It is the place where I got my M.D. degree after a hard study, the school of which I have been a member of staff on and off since 1974. Practically my whole life is connected with this school, and thus with Charles University. I have always been proud to be a part of it and have tried, and still try, to be a valid part of it.

What experience associated with studying at the faculty do you remember the most?

The whole study was a school of life, the greatest experience was probably the student movement, the strike, in 1968, just after I joined the faculty, the lectures of our teachers, who spoke to us as equals those days and quite differently from the official views of that time.

What do you consider to be the greatest success in your career so far?

Probably what I’ve been doing all my professional life – helping people see better, 31 years in a leadership role, many outstanding individuals that I’ve worked with and still continue, who I’ve helped develop their skills, achieve assessments, scientific degrees, place in management positions.

What hobbies are you into in your free time?

I enjoy sports activities, gardening and working with wood.
